Course Description
The purpose of the qualification is to build the knowledge and skills required by learners in End User Computing. It is intended to empower learners to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and values required to operate confidently in the End User Computing environment in the South African community and to respond to the challenges of the economic environment.
The qualification addresses the need in the workplace for nationally recognised qualifications, based on unit standards, which will allow learners with workplace experience in End User Computing to obtain recognition for prior learning.
The qualification provides a framework for learners to develop skills that will enable them to become competent in End User Computing. It introduces theoretical concepts of End User Computing and requires the application thereof, to develop a range of skills that will enable learners to be better-informed workers in their chosen industry. It provides a balanced learning experience that lays the foundation for access to further education, lifelong learning and to productive employment.
Who is the course intended for?
Learners working towards this qualification will find that the acquisition of competence in the unit standards, which make up the qualification, will add value to their work performance. This qualification is intended to enhance the provision of service within the field of Administration within all sectors. Through building day-to-day administration skills, as well as general operational competencies, the qualification ensures progression of learning, enabling the learner to meet standards of service excellence required within the administration field of learning.

It is assumed that the learner is competent in skills gained at the further education and training band up to NQF level 2. Further learning assumed is that learners are competent in End User Computing at NQF level 1.
Recognition of prior learning:
Many of the competencies used in the IT profession has traditionally been acquired through short courses and on-the-job training, which did not provide formal recognition (at a national level) of the knowledge and skills acquired. These competencies are still today viewed by most industries as invaluable but there is no national recognition. The nature of the IT field means that competence is developed experientially, therefore the assessment processes should recognise experience versus theoretical knowledge. Recognition of prior learning will now allow learners with these valuable competencies to be assessed and recognised formally.
Any learner wishing to be assessed may arrange to do so without having to attend any formal training. For recognition of prior learning the learner will be required to submit a portfolio of evidence of relevant experience, in a prescribed format, to be assessed for formal recognition.
Course Objectives
On achieving this qualification, the learner will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of applying Graphical User Interface (GUI)-based Word Processing Application skills in the Workplace.
- Demonstrate an understanding of applying Graphical User Interface (GUI)-based Presentation Application skills in the Workplace.
- Demonstrate an understanding of applying GUI-based Spreadsheet Application skills in the Workplace.
- Demonstrate an understanding of applying GUI-based Electronic Mail Application skills in the Workplace.
- Demonstrate an understanding of applying GUI-based Web Browser Application skills in the Workplace.

Course Description
The purpose of this qualification is to build a foundational entry into the field of Computer Sciences and Information Technology, specifically into the field of Systems Support, covering basic knowledge needed for further study in the field of Systems Support at Higher Education Levels.
The qualification can be acquired in the traditional way of formal study as well as in the workplace, through learnerships. Acquiring the qualification through learnerships has the potential of addressing the problems of the past, where newly qualified people getting into the industry struggled to get employment, because they were required to have practical experience.
The workplace experience can now be gained while acquiring the qualification through the various learnership schemes that are planning to use this qualification.
A Qualifying learner at this level will be a well-rounded entry-level Systems Support professional with a good fundamental knowledge of the Information Technology field, coupled with interpersonal and business skills, allowing for specialisation in one of the following Systems Support fields:
- Hardware and Infrastructure Support for Personal Computers
- Hardware and Infrastructure Support for Office Products
- Data Communications and Networking
- (and any new field not specified yet, allowing for new specialisations in this area)
Entry Requirements
It is compulsory therefore for learners to do Communication in two different South African languages, one at Level 4 and the other at Level 3. All Unit Standards in the Fundamental Component are compulsory. The Fundamental Component consists of Unit Standards to the value of 56 credits all of which are compulsory.
Who is the course intended for?
This qualification provides a planned combination of learning outcomes that will equip qualifying learners with the flexibility to articulate in the IT environment with a wide variety of specialisation options and articulation within the Telecommunications, Information Technology and Electronic Industries and other industries where IT is a key component, like the Financial Services Industry.
Learning assumed to be in place and recognition of prior learning
Learners may access this Qualification in terms of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which is subject to quality assurance by the relevant accredited ETQA and is conducted by a registered workplace assessor, subject to the terms of the model decided upon by the relevant ETQA. The qualification is specifically designed to accommodate a broad range of recognition of prior learning. This intention is reflected in the structure of the qualification and in the rules for combination of credits towards the qualification. The intention is to provide recognition for all the relevant skills which learners already possess and even to provide recognition for skills which might not be relevant to the job through the elective category.

Course Description
The purpose of this qualification is to build a foundational entry into the field of Computer Sciences and Information Technology, specifically into the field of Systems Development, covering basic knowledge needed for further study in the field of Systems Development at Higher Education Levels. The qualification can be acquired in the traditional way of formal study as well as in the workplace, through learnerships. The qualification is designed to:
- provide learners with an entry level for further study in Information Technology and related fields, as well as for initial employment in the computer industry.
- allow many of the listed unit standards to be used in Learnership Schemes in the Information Systems and Technology sector, as well as other sectors where Information Technology is a key requirement.
- provide a foundational qualification for people who are pursuing a career in the computer industry, or related fields. People with this qualification have an introductory level of understanding about computer industry concepts and/or are able to work in areas of Information Technology with little technical complexity, for example entry-level computer programming, as junior project team member.
- allow the credits achieved in the National Certificates in Information Technology (Level 2 & 3) to be used as foundation (i.e. learning assumed to be in place) for the requirements of this qualification.
- have a flexible structure to allow for changing requirements in the computer industry, and to allow providers to create learning programmes with a predominantly Information Technology component but tailored to meet local, national or international needs.

Who is the course intended for?
This qualification has been developed for professional practice across the industry and is intended to ensure professionalism within junior positions in the industry ensuring the upliftment of the standards in general. It is applicable to small and large businesses alike, and builds on other certificates from a range of sub-sectors and will provide articulation with a range of qualifications.
Upon successful completion of the qualification, the learner will be a Systems Developer able to carry out competently the exit level outcomes in a business environment. The purpose of this qualification is stated as being a foundational qualification at the Further Education band, allowing for further study in Information Technology and related fields at Higher Education entry level (National Certificate). This will allow the qualified learner to progress to further qualifications either in Systems Development or other IT domains, or in other related industries where IT is a key component.

Systems Support Level 5

Duration of Qualification: This programme consists of Fundamental and Elective Unit Standards and will be covered over a period of one year (see breakdown for more information)

Course Description
The qualification may be acquired in the traditional way of formal study as well as in the workplace, through learnerships. Acquiring the qualification through learnerships has the potential of addressing the problems of the past, where newly qualified people getting into the industry struggled to get employment, because they were required to have practical experience. The workplace experience can now be gained while acquiring the qualification through the various learnership schemes that are planning to use this qualification.
A qualifying learner at this level will be a well-rounded IT professional building on foundational technical skills acquired at NQF level 4, via the National Certificate in IT Technical Support or equivalent. This qualification is expanding the specialisation(s) started at NQF level 4 into the core field of networking and support, with further specialisation(s) into IT Support fields or in any other related vertical or enabled markets.
The qualification is designed to:
- Provide qualified learners with an undergraduate entry into the field of networking/systems support, earning credits towards tertiary offerings in the fields of Computer Studies or Computer Science
- Prepare qualified learners for initial employment in the computer industry.
- Allow the credits achieved in the National Certificates relating to Information Technology at NQF level 4 to be used as prior learning for this qualification.
- Allow many of the unit standards listed in this qualification, to be used in Learnership Schemes in the Information Systems and Technology sector, as well as other sectors where Information Technology is a key requirement.
Who is the course intended for?
This qualification has been developed to assist with professionalisation across the Information Technology Industry. It is intended to allow qualified learners to gain membership of registered professional bodies in the ICT industry.
Learning assumed to be in place and recognition of prior learning
It is assumed that the learner must be competent in skills gained at the further education and training band. A learning assumption of this qualification is foundational skills in English and Mathematics at NQF level 4. Further learning assumed is the ability to use a personal computer competently. Learners may access this Qualification in terms of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which is subject to quality assurance by the relevant accredited ETQA and is conducted by a registered workplace assessor, subject to the terms of the model decided upon by the relevant ETQA. The qualification is specifically designed to accommodate a broad range of recognition of prior learning. This intention is reflected in the structure of the qualification and in the rules for combination of credits towards the qualification. The intention is to provide recognition for all the relevant skills which learners already possess and even to provide recognition for skills which might not be relevant to the job through the elective category.

What is SETA accreditation?
According to the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), accreditation means that a person, a body or an institution has been certified as “having the capacity to fulfill a particular function in the quality assurance system set up by the South African Qualifications Authority.”
SETA accreditation can only be attained by a training provider if it successfully completes the stringent application process prescribed by a relevant SETA. SETA accreditation is therefore the result of a process whereby a SETA determines whether a training provider has the necessary capacity and ability to provide quality training in line with National Qualifications Framework (NQF) standards.
What is the purpose of SETA Accreditation?
The purpose of SETA accreditation is to make sure that education and training is of a high standard and quality and that it is relevant to the needs of the industry sector in question. If a training provider has SETA accreditation, it means that the training provider’s courses comply with the NQF standards, and that the courses offered have been evaluated to ensure that they are in line with these standards. SETA accreditation also aims to ensure that there is uniformity of similar courses offered by different training providers. SETA accreditation therefore provides the assurance that a training provider will be capable of providing relevant training and education that is in line with national standards. Another purpose of SETA accreditation is to ensure that the courses being offered by accredited training providers are relevant to industry needs and will equip students with the skills that they will need in the workplace.
ServicesSETA - Services Sector Education and Training Authority
The Services Sector Education and Training Authority (or Services SETA as it is more commonly referred to) was originally established in 2000 to ensure that the skills needs of the services sector would be identified and correctly addressed. The Services SETA committed to achieve this task by forming partnerships with various stakeholders and role-players and by implementing a focused business plan.
Ten years down the line, the Services SETA is still operating, but will change a little bit when the new SETA landscape comes into being in South Africa in March 2011.
BankSETA - Banking Sector Education and Training Authority
The Banking Sector Education and Training Authority (BANKSETA) is an enabler of skills development and transformation in the broader banking & microfinance sector and supports people development through partnerships, skills development, alleviating unemployment, creating a brighter future and enabling change. BANKSETA focuses on SMEs, the youth, adult education, continuous professional development and research. Skills development has been identified as a key requirement for economic growth in South Africa, as a result, the Skills Development Act provides a framework for the development of skills in the workplace.
CathsSETA - Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality, and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority
The Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality, and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA) is one of the 21 SETAs established under the Skills Development Act (No 97 of 1998) in 2001.CATHSSETA was formally known as the Tourism and Hospitality Education and Training Authority (THETA) until 1 April 2012, when we became the Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority.
Their mandate is to facilitate skills development within their sub-sectors through the disbursement of grants for learning programmes and monitoring of education and training as outlined in the National Skills Development Strategy (NSDS).
MerSETA - Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority
The merSETA like all other SETAs play a central role in making sure that the National Skills Development Strategy (NSDS) is fulfilled. The merSETA does not collect levies but instead receives collected levies from the Department of Higher Education and Training. Seventy percent of the levies are disbursed as grants and 10% is kept for administration. The merSETA does not train -- instead it facilitates the process of training by paying grants, registering moderators and assessors, identifying scarce skills, accrediting providers, monitoring the quality of training and implementing projects to close the skills gap.
MictSETA - Media, Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority
The Media, Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority (MICT SETA) is a skills development institution established in terms of the Skills Development Act of 1998, to generate, facilitate and accelerate the processes of quality skills development at all levels in the MICT sector in South Africa. The MICT sector is made up of five subsectors that are interconnected but also quite distinct and identifiable in their own right. These are: advertising, film and electronic media, electronics, information technology and telecommunications.
The MICT SETA intends to engage in learning programmes and quality assurance of education and training of implemented learning initiatives, which lead to employment and new venture creation, while at the same time engaging in programmes that assist in bridging the digital divide, especially in rural areas.
TETA - Transport Education Training Authority
The mission of the Transport Education Training Authority (TETA) is to provide an innovative Quality Assurance and Skills Development Framework in a cost-effective manner to exceed stakeholder/government Service Level Agreement (SLA) and requirements.
The functions of TETA are the: development of a Sector Skills Plan (SSP) for the transport sector; implementation of the SSP through learnership implementation, approval of workplace skills plans, allocation of levy grants, and monitoring of Education, Training and Development (ETD) activities in the transport sector; quality assurance of ETD interventions; and disbursement of levy grants.
W&RSETA - Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority
The mission of the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA) is to develop a skilled, capable, competent and professional workforce to transform the wholesale and retail sector.
W&RSETA's strategic goals are to: create a culture of lifelong and workplace learning; address historic imbalances, with a focus on class, race, gender, geographical locations and disability, in the development of people in the W&R sector; facilitate funded and accessible training to meet sector needs; and align with national development strategies in line with the requirements of government to foster skills development in the W&R sector for productivity and employment.
InSETA - Insurance Services Sector Education and Training Authority
The Insurance Sector Education and Training Authority's (INSETA) primary purpose is grow the pool and quality of critical and scarce skills within the insurance sector.
